Cartooning: 24Hour Comics

The Fairbanks 24-hour comics session is this weekend!

Cartoon North: the exhibition

The work of more than seventy artists, most of them Alaskans, was featured in this exciting show, the first comprehensive exhibit of Alaska sequential art and cartooning. From the sublimely beautiful to the hysterically funny, these animators, cartoonists, inkers, pencilists, letterers, graphic artists, writers, and painters created a gamut of pop culture artwork.

The opening was a smash success; perhaps 500 people attended, one of the biggest openings ever at the Annex (and this despite the road construction!). A note: the exhibit catalogue was NOT a freebie--if you walked out with one but didn't pay for it, you still owe the gallery $12 (about twelve catalogues weren't paid for...).

Cartoon North: the workshops

Three workshops, a cartoon jam, and a Final Friday slide lecture were part of the month's activities at the Annex in conjunction with this show. Professional comics artist, author, and analyst Scott McCloud came up from the Lower 48 to present one of these. Contact the curator for more information.

The best of the show is reprinted in this book, available from the Annex art gallery and the Ester Republic Press.
